It had been a wonderful trip.

"I wouldn't mind doing this again," Lucille said, having just stepped through the portal. She smiled at Tisarwat, resting a gloved hand on her arm.

It was Lucille's world, but it was more than a century later than when she had grown up, and while staying in Fandom had offered her the opportunity to learn about the contemporary world, it had still been a different thing to see it for herself, although truth be told, she hadn't actually been able to travel during her own time.

They had very <strike>handwavily traveled</strike> around the planet, visiting both cities, quiet places in the countryside as well as seen dramatic landscapes. There had been visits to museums, excursions, shopping, and of course plenty of tea.

"Tea?"

comments

Lucille was just about to leave for work, when she noticed a book she didn't recognise lying on a side table. Intrigued, she thought Tisarwat had brought it home, and she walked over to pick it up.

A old book on snakes?

Frowning, she turned a few pages, and then suddenly it fell to the floor with a thud, and Lucille found herself next to it, now a curled up black adder. Although surprised, she quickly decided to find a better place than a cold floor, and slithered up on to the couch and curled up next to a soft pillow.

[I'm going away for a week, and Lucille is a snake, Kiem is a rabbit and Seivarden is a cat, with Tisarwat, Sakaki and Summer having modding rights respectively.]

comments

The past two days, ever since that fateful attempt at playing the piano, Lucille and Tisarwat had spent a lot of time in bed together, with breaks for tea and food and reading of inspiring poetry. Now they were both asleep in Lucille's room, comfortable, Lucille with an arm wrapped around Tisarwat.

Then a chord struck on the piano, and then another one, clearly intended to be dramatic. Lucille was instantly awake, instinctively out of bed, and wrapped a shawl over her nightgown as she hurried to the living room.

[For the kid and the co-parent.]

comments

It wasn't like Lucille never had nightmares about asylums or deaths, but this week had been hard to endure. At least electric light helped, and large amounts of tea had kept her awake. She struck a chord, then shifted on to another, then moved to a soft and melancholy melody.

This was just a short practice before breakfast, a way to wake up after having stayed up too long last night.
So, Lucille was expecting a guest. She had set the table with her best teacups and plates from home, the china expensive but now a bit chipped, and arranged some cookies on a plate. Bought, not homemade. She was aware baking was not one of her talents.

Then a pot of freshly brewed tea, and a few volumes of poetry, and along one of the walls was the piano of course.
Lucille kept an eye on the boxes and few pieces of furniture being delivered to her new home. Now she noticed the smell of damp and mold coming from them, something she hadn't noticed when living in Allerdale Hall, and thought that it might actually be more healthy to live on the island in a number of ways.

"Don't drop that box!" It was the one containing important mementos; letters, a few of Thomas' things, and some things she preferred others not to see.

"Of course not." The look she got back wasn't quite an insulted one, and she could make the assumption the sigh was just from the mover just being tired.
Lucille had spent the morning playing the piano, occasionally smirking at the portrait of her mother on the wall above. When alive, her mother had not approved of her playing, or of anything Lucille had wanted to do, and imagining her now tormented by the sight was why the portrait was still hanging there. She had already killed the horrible woman with a meat cleaver after all, so cutting up a painting of her didn't feel necessary.

Her mother's portrait was not a substitute for company though, and Lucille was lonely. Making herself tea, burning the food she tried to cook, wondering what to do about the repairs needing to be done, reading something from the library, she still found herself with a lot of time on her hands for brooding over her life and her future.

She should write more letters, she decided. She already wrote regularly to Thomas, although not very personal letters as she was sure someone at his school read them. Her Fandom friends would probably not be subject to that though (and if they did, she didn't care about nosy portalocity postmasters' opinion of her), and so she could be a lot more open with them.

So she wrote about the weather (cold and rainy, although a ray of sunlight broke through the clouds yesterday afternoon), her piano playing ("I practice every day"), her house (joking that it was still standing), inventing a new biscuit recipe (unfortunately I burnt them) and the library ("There are still so many books I haven't read."), a few new favourite novels ("They both died at the end"). She didn't write about being lonely, as she feared that would make her friends think she was in need of them visiting.

Around lunchtime she had finished all of the letters, and the old man who delivered her food took them with him back to the post office.

[If you think your character might have received a letter from Lucille, they did. She misses everyone. Possibly even Ringo, although Ringo doesn't get a letter.]

comments

Lucille put her suitcase down on the floor and closed the heavy doors behind her. The large hall smelled of damp air, and on the surface beneath the hole in the ceiling was a dark spot on the floorboards. There was a creaking sound as she walked towards the centre of the room, leaving blood-red marks behind her. The mud outside had stuck to her boots, as it usually did.

She was alone. Thomas wouldn't arrive until later, and perhaps just shortly before she was going to return to Fandom for the rest of the summer. Had that been a bad choice?
